The unexpected twist is the center's architectural presence - an industrial campus of wood and steel cradled against steep cliffs in a way that shows how even the least glamorous aspects of modern life can be housed in energetic style. The center announces itself with the angled roof and low cedar walls of the open shed that houses the exchange center; you then turn left and enter a curved parking area lined by 10 bays that shelter the recycling bins. The largest structure on site rises behind the easternmost bays, a butterfly roof 35 feet tall at the outer edges beneath which the center's crew carries out such tasks as bundling cardboard and using forklifts to dump small bins into large containers. The various shed structures, for instance, consist of tall concrete bases that support V-shaped steel beams, which in turn are topped by roofs of corrugated steel. Creative efficiencyAs for the administration building, it's formed from three prefabricated sections by Zeta Communities that were assembled by Pankow on-site - a process that cut down on construction waste, and which is explained on one of the information panels alongside the exchange center.
